UAF Life Sciences Facility

Fairbanks, Alaska

Designing high-tech learning environments for Alaska’s students.

The architectural design of the Life Sciences Facility created a signature building for the life sciences at UAF. The materials, plan organization, and resolution of major building volumes respond to the context of existing buildings at the campus, the natural surroundings and expansive views across the Alaskan Interior. The facility houses undergraduate teaching laboratories, classrooms, research laboratories, faculty offices for the College of Natural Science and Mathematics and offices for the Department of Biology and Wildlife. The three main floors are organized with the concept of co-locating teaching laboratories, research laboratories and faculty offices on the same floor around a central open communicating stair that connects all three teaching and research floors.
