The village of Kipnuk is located on the Kuguklik River and is prone to massive flooding as well as tidal surges due to the proximity to the coast. BDS took on this difficult project with a spectacular result. In addition, the site was incredibly tight and cluttered with support buildings, equipment, and infrastructure, including a dysfunctional sewage lagoon. The design team developed plans to clear and mitigate the site (including removing the lagoon and fuel contaminated soil) and expanded the footprint of the school to meet the current and estimated future population of students. The addition and renovation of the existing school totals approximately 52,095 SF. The project was phased to accommodate the academic calendar; the students moved into the new section while the existing school was renovated.
