Houston High School

Houston, Alaska

When disaster struck, Houston saw opportunities

Houston Middle School was severely damaged and structurally condemned after the November 2018 Earthquake, but the community of Houston spotted an opportunity amid the destruction. The existing 1980s building would be demolished and replaced with a brand-new Career Technical Education (CTE) focused High School to train students with job skills relevant to the community. Through a careful planning process with the community, teachers, students, and administrators, BDS was able to create a new program for the school that included space for the technical instruction everyone wanted to include.  The new school facility includes a welding classroom, a construction laboratory, and a culinary arts classroom, as well as spaces for traditional classrooms and break out areas for small group collaboration and study.
