The two-story mechanical penthouse facility supports up to 3,000 rodents and small birds. The animals are in holding rooms clustered in suites with procedure rooms on a secure below-grade floor level, along with a small lab, cage wash, and cage preparation facilities. A section of each holding room can be readily converted to a barrier facility with air-lock entries and staff changing rooms. The facility also allows for future expansion of the animal holding quarters into the adjacent lower floor of the new State of Alaska Virology building that is currently in design.
