Piuraagvik “A Place to Play”  Barrow Recreation Center

Barrow, Alaska

http://nottsbushido.co.uk/hotstore/Hotsale-20150822-246160.html The Barrow Recreation Center, or "Piuraagvik," was originally designed by BDS in 1985 and is considered one of the finest multi-use spaces in Alaska. Complete with a full-size gymnasium with spectator bleachers and two handball courts, it also houses a meeting room, saunas, locker rooms, offices, a lobby, and a warming kitchen for potlatches.

We maintained the room’s original acoustical design, which virtually eliminates reverberations and provides clarity of the room’s spectrum of sounds – from cheering crowds at basketball games to drumbeats during traditional Native dancing. We nearly tripled the size of the center, added a climbing wall, and created a tight building envelope by insulating exterior walls to expel Barrow’s arctic conditions throughout the year.
